The PlayStation Legacy

June 18, 2008

A couple of months ago, I applied for a freelance columnist position with a popular PlayStation fan site. I didn’t get the position, but I’d like to try out my column here. As part of the application, I had to devise 10 sample topics to go with whatever theme I chose. I decided to do a column called The PlayStation Legacy, focusing on the impact (both positive and negative) that the PlayStation brand has had on video games and home entertainment. Possible topics to explore include:

  1. Revisiting quintessential PlayStation titles to examine what made them successful and how these games impacted future game development
  2. An analysis of innovations Sony has introduced to the industry (Home, Dual Analog Sticks, DVD & Blu Ray compatability, etc.)
  3. Constructive criticisms of mistakes or missteps (Lack of PS3 rumble, UMD video, forced SIXAXIS control in Lair, etc.)
  4. A look at influential development studios and how they take advantage of Sony’s hardware
  5. Previews of upcoming titles with potential long-term implications for the industry (for example, releasing games on Blu Ray and on PSN simultaneously)
  6. Retrospectives on influential games or series from Sony’s history
  7. Discussion of some overlooked gems that may have reviewed well but performed poorly at retail
  8. Asking how the PlayStation brand is perceived by the general, non-gaming public
  9. Discussion of the potential impact of current events (for example, Phil Harrison’s move to Atari, the announcement of the Metal Gear PS3 SKU, etc.)
  10. Analysis of studies on the benefits and/or harmful effects of video games (Note: As a psychology researcher myself, this is the area I am most interested in – specifically, the potential neurological effects of violent games)

Wii Fit: Day 10

June 17, 2008

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

I find that I push myself just a bit harder when I run if I’m not listening to the ‘Couch to 5K’ podcast series. If I’m listening to the podcast, small goals are usually about running for 60, 90, 120 seconds, etc. If I’m listening to my own music, small goals are about finishing the current song while running, which can be up to an extra 2 or 3 minutes. Today, just to see if I could, I skipped the 5 minute warm-up and just ran for a mile straight. It wasn’t as hard as I expected, but it made all subsequent running that much harder when my left shin started acting up again.

Notes

I like that these Wii Fit updates are motivating me to keep active on this blog, but I think they’re crowding up the real/editorial posts. I may switch to Wii Fit on weekdays and editorial posts over the weekend. That way I can work on articles throughout the week during my spare time.

Wii Fit: Day 9

June 16, 2008

Monday, June 16, 2008

I was expecting tonight to be a bit of a setback. I went out to dinner twice this weekend. I tried eating healthy, but when you’re a vegetarian in a steakhouse, the only available option is pasta. Oh well. I should be back on track tomorrow. I’m just about done unlocking all of the activities, and I’ve settled into the ones I like. My ideal Wii Fit session lasts about 45 minutes.

Running was a bit harder tonight than in the past. I’ve begun carrying 2lb weights in each hand while I run, because it helps with my balance on the treadmill. The machine I use faces a closed window, making it harder to focus on longer sprints when there’s no change in scenery. The weights allow me to look straight ahead (instead of down at my shoes) and still keep my balance.

Wii Fit: Day 7

June 14, 2008

Saturday, June 14, 2008

I had to skip exercise yesterday because we had a guest over, and I was actually disappointed that I didn’t get a chance to use Wii Fit. For me, that’s shocking. I’ve never been one to look forward to exercise. I was eager to try out the advanced version of boxing. It’s a 6-minute aerobic exercise that actually relies more on short-term memory and coordination than stamina. It’s extremely difficult not because the exercise is hard, but because the trainer does a terrible job of making sure you know what steps to do. The commands fly by too quickly and you’ll get confused long before you get winded. Still, I think it’ll be one of my favorite exercises once I get the hang of it.

Death Jr.: Root of Evil Review

June 14, 2008

Root of Evil Header

My review for Death Jr.: Root of Evil on the Wii went up on GameSpot yesterday. I had more fun with the game than I thought I would, but it’s still nothing amazing. Great personality, mediocre execution. I imagine it isn’t garnering much attention over there, since Kevin’s review for Metal Gear Solid 4 went up as well. He gave it a 10, which is a big deal if only for the fact that GameSpot very rarely hands that score out. Most recently, they gave a 10 to Grand Theft Auto IV, but it had been years before that the last 10 was given. I can’t really speak on the scores for GTAIV and MGS4, because I’ve only played a bit of the former and none of the latter. I should really get around to playing both games, though.
