I own very few unopened video games. I consider myself a collector, but collecting video games is unlike most hobbies in that items in your collection are rarely in pristine condition. You buy video games to play them, not to leave them in packages on a shelf. You can’t admire the art in a video game if you don’t play it. That being said, I own sealed copies of NiGHTS on the Sega Saturn and Metal Gear Solid on the PSone because I don’t have the means or the interest, respectively, to play them.
I recently discovered that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was available at Best Buy in a limited edition metallic package, so I ran out to grab a copy. I’ve been playing the original Final Fantasy VII on my PS3 in anticipation of Crisis Core, but I’m no where near finished, so I’ve got some time before I start the PSP version. I can’t decide whether I want to open the package I bought at Best Buy or wait until the price drops and grab a regular copy. If any video game has the potential to increase in value, it’s a Final Fantasy VII title. And I’ve got plenty of time before I’m ready to play it. But is it worth paying an extra $30 or $40 to own two copies of the same game?
I do understand your dilemma. That conundrum is something that I have been faced with for a long time and it seems the only solution is to purchase 2 copies of everything. As you know, that is a truly expensive solution and one that I unfortunately can’t afford considering all of the games out there that I want to collect. Such a sad state of affairs.
Yeah, unfortunately collecting video games is one of the more expensive hobbies. I’ve been collecting for about 20 years now and I think this might be the first time I ever purchase two copies of the same game.
I’d just open it.
Think about your collection–is it for your own personal satisfaction, or are you planning to sell? If you just collect for yourself, which I think you do, then I would just open your special edition copy. You still have the satisfaction of having the game, the satisfaction of of playing it, and the satisfaction of saving $30/$40 dollars. 
I really love the Final Fantasy franchise. I hope Final Fantasy 7 gets remade. All we can do is wait. In the meanwhile, I have playing Final Fantasy 7 PC with a number ofdifferent patches. Do you thinkthat a FF VII will be released?
